Rookie Suter Honda rider Alex Rins topped the Moto3 qualifying timesheets after a last minute scramble for pole at the Jerez circuit on Saturday afternoon.

His team-mate Portuguese rider Miguel Oliviera also made the front row, while German Sandro Cortese had a quiet session before powering home to second in the final seconds.

A rare dry session at Jerez this weekend caused the field to change to slicks for the final few minutes of the qualifying session, causing the lead to change by the second, with Spaniard Alex Rins coming out top with seconds to spare.

"It was one of those crazy one-lap runs, as I wasn't sure which type of tyres to put on," said Rins. "However, my crew saw what the asphalt was like and what the conditions were doing, instructing me that it would be better to put on slicks. They got it right."

His time couldn't be beaten by late efforts by Red Bull KTM rider Sandro Cortese or his Estrella Galicia 0'0 colleague Miguel Oliviera who complete the front row.

Frenchman Alexis Masbou put in an impressive performance to put his Caretta Technology machine into fourth, while one time leader Jakub Kornfeil kept his consistency from the practice sessions to qualify a career best fifth.

Australian Jack Miller lead for a large part of the session, which paid off as he remained sixth on the grid after all the
lead changes in only his second ever qualifying session on the Caretta Technology Honda.

Isaac Vinales finished ahead of his more famous cousin in seventh on his Ongetta-Centro Seta FTR Honda, while Australian Arthur Sissis made the most of being among the first to swap to slick tyres in Eighth.

Maverick Vinales will have some work to do after being late out of the pits he got back in the mix to finish ninth, yesterdays practice leader Romano Fenati who was second in Qatar completes the top ten.

Danny Kent struggled to stay in the top ten all session eventually finishing qualifying in 15th on the Red Bull KTM, well behind his team mates Cortese and Sissis. Fellow Brit Danny Webb struggled with his Mahindra spending most of the session near last, but a late effort moved him up to 21st on the grid.
