Spies misses his chance

“We used our tyre a little bit too soon and there were too many damp spots and then the cloud had moved away” - Ben Spies.

Ben Spies will start Sunday's Spanish MotoGP at Jerez from sixth place after missing his opportunity in the ever changing Jerez conditions.

A drying track and constant threat of rain made it a very difficult session for the riders and Spies felt his soft tyre timing was a little out.

“I'm a little bit frustrated,” commented Spies when asked about his qualifying efforts.

“We used our tyre a little bit too soon and there were too many damp spots and then the cloud had moved away. So we lost our opportunity. I could have gone faster if we waited five minutes but the track was really tricky.”

Having endured a disastrous opening race of the year in Qatar, due to a problem with the frame of his Yamaha M1, the Texan knew that it was important to avoid crashing in the difficult conditions.

“From last weekend in Qatar, to be on the front row I would have had to take some risks,” said the American. “I went as fast as good as I could without throwing the bike down.”

Team-mate Jorge Lorenzo will start from pole.

For everyone trying to give Spies ride to Crutchlow already...... Ben first season at Tech3 - 6 top 4 placements with 2 podiums, also 5 top 4 qualifying positions with 1 pole. 6th in final points Cal first season at Tech3 - 1 top 4 and......... nothing else. 12th in final points. Last race of 2011 - Valencia in changing conditions, results - Spies 2nd, Crutchlow 4th. (Cals best race of the season and he was still 2 places behind Ben!) Crutchlow has started out this season well but really, WTF? Sorry to to bring fact into the debate! LOL

@DrifterJake That's all very well, but I think you'll find that Lin Jarvis isn't currently looking at what Ben did 2 years ago, he's looking at what he's doing now. This game is all about the improvement quotient and who has - or has not - hit their performance ceiling. Obviously the talk of anybody taking his ride at this point is way premature, but you can bet that what Jarvis and Yamaha will be expecting from Ben this season is a step forward from last year. Better qualifying, better starts, more podiums, a higher ch'ship placing. That's irrespective of who might be eyeing his place in the team.
