Ben Spies will start Sunday's Spanish MotoGP at Jerez from sixth place after missing his opportunity in the ever changing Jerez conditions.
A drying track and constant threat of rain made it a very difficult session for the riders and Spies felt his soft tyre timing was a little out.
“I'm a little bit frustrated,” commented Spies when asked about his qualifying efforts.
“We used our tyre a little bit too soon and there were too many damp spots and then the cloud had moved away. So we lost our opportunity. I could have gone faster if we waited five minutes but the track was really tricky.”
Having endured a disastrous opening race of the year in Qatar, due to a problem with the frame of his Yamaha M1, the Texan knew that it was important to avoid crashing in the difficult conditions.
“From last weekend in Qatar, to be on the front row I would have had to take some risks,” said the American. “I went as fast as good as I could without throwing the bike down.”
Team-mate Jorge Lorenzo will start from pole.
