2012 MotoGP World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo experienced a 'so-so' Friday practice at Estoril, on the day of his 25th birthday.
The Factory Yamaha star was one of just two riders to sit out the damp morning session completely, then set the fifth fastest time during dryer conditions in the afternoon.
Lorenzo finished second practice 0.534s behind title rival Casey Stoner (Honda).
"Today was so-so because we didn't find a good set up or a good feeling with the bike," said Lorenzo, who has won three of the last four Estoril MotoGPs.
"Also the new asphalt is not the best, I think it's worse than last year in some places and also the weather doesn't help with some wet patches in corners.
"I expect a lot of things to improve tomorrow, especially the rear of the bike which is not right in some corners."
Team-mate Ben Spies was second quickest.
