Qualifying for the Portuguese MotoGP at Estoril has been red flagged following a nasty accident involving Randy de Puniet and Colin Edwards.

The two CRT riders tangled when de Puniet - on a fast lap - lost the front of his Aprilia, which then wiped out an unsuspecting Edwards, moving slowly off-line on an out lap.

de Puniet eventually walked away, but Edwards stayed down after falling heavily onto his left shoulder. Once the session had been stopped, the Texan was carried away on a stretcher.

Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) currently leads qualifying by just 0.008sec from Casey Stoner (Honda) with eleven minutes remaining once the session restarts.

UPDATE: It has been confirmed that Edwards has a broken collarbone and will therefore miss the race.
