Abraham wins Porsche, Jet Fighter race

"The runway is very wide, so you don't feel the speed as at the race track" - Karel Abraham.
Cardion AB MotoGP rider Karel Abraham took part in an unusual race at Brno International Airport on Sunday.

Rather than his usual two-wheeled opponents, Abraham lined-up against a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup driven by Czech champion Tomas Micanek and a Czech army L-29 Dolphin fighter jet!

But it was Abraham, riding a Ducati 1199 Panigale, that took victory.

According to Abraham's Cardion AB team, the drag race was held on the main runway of Brno International Airport, with Abraham and Micanek starting as the fighter moved over them at a speed of approximately 200 km/h.

The winner was decided in the final metres, by which time Abraham and Micanek were close to reaching 300km/h.

“I need more time to accelerate to this speed,” explained Pavel Vesely, a retired Czech Army pilot who was flying the Dolphin.

Abraham, whose bike was borrowed from Ducati Slovakia, said: “It´s an exciting bike. I really would like to ride it at circuit - not only in straight. It didn't [feel like] 300km/h. The runway is very wide, so you don't feel the speed as at the race track.”

Micanek, who passed the chequered flag just behind Abraham, blamed his machinery for the defeat.

“It´s a shame that I couldn't drive fastest RSR version, because our mechanics were still working on it and preparing it for the next race. I think in that case we could see a Porsche passing the finish line in first place,” he said.

“Yes, and If I rode MotoGP Desmosedici, guess who's the winner!” laughed Abraham.

Abraham will be back on his GP12 MotoGP machine in this weekend's Catalan Grand Prix.
