Moto3 championship favourite Maverick Vinales charged to a home pole position during Saturday's qualifying for the Catalunya grand prix.

Currently second in the standings, the Blusens FTR Honda rider was closely followed around the track by a large group of riders for most of the session, all hoping to emulate his performance around the circuit.

AirAsia KTM's Zulfami Khairrudin continues to set new standards both personally and as a Malaysian rider with his first ever front row start - he begins tomorrow's race from second.

Fresh from his home victory in Le Mans Louis Rossi completes the front row for Racing Team Germany.

Championship leader Sandro Cortese qualified his Red Bull KTM Ajo in fourth despite carrying a hand injury sustained in the final practice session which needed draining by syringe during the session.

Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira qualified fifth despite a huge crash in the closing minute at turn one, which also took out Brad Binder and Alan Techer.

Luis Salom finished the session in Sixth for RW Racing on the Kalex KTM while birthday boy Alexis Masbou will make his 100th grand prix start from seventh after a strong performance.

Efren Vazquez put in an understated but improving performance for the JHK T-Shirt Laglisse team on the FTR Honda in eighth place. Seasoned performer Hector Faubel finished the session ninth for the Bankia Aspar team while Italian Niccolo Antonelli completes the top ten for San Carlo Gresini.

Popular Italian rookie Romano Fenati found himself pushed down the order in the later stages and finds himself in 13th position. The Team Italia FMI bikes have a special livery this weekend to support the survivors of the earthquakes in the Emilia region of Italy.

Danny Kent finds himself down on the fifth row after qualifying down in 14th for the Red Bull KTM team, fellow Briton and wildcard entry John McPhee nearly out qualified him and is just one place behind in 15th on his Racing Steps Foundation KRP Honda.

Danny Webb, who is suffering with flu this weekend finished the session in 31st on the Mahindra despite changes to the bike since Le Mans.
