Jorge Lorenzo concedes he will need to find more front-end feeling on his Yamaha if he wants to challenge for victory in the Catalunya Grand Prix.
The championship leader has been unable to get the better of his key Repsol Honda rivals so far this weekend, but hinted at his potential with a run to second position during the closing stages of the qualifying session.
Even so, while Lorenzo is satisfied with the level of progress made over the course of the weekend, he says more needs to come if he is to carry his form into the race.
“It was very important to finish on the front row today because I knew all the riders would be pushing to the limit in qualifying,” the Spaniard said. “The lap times were very close but I managed to make a good lap. I almost crashed in T3 on my first hot lap on the bumps so second place is good for tomorrow.
“We still need a little good feeling on the front; we are struggling on some corners so we need to improve the feeling or it's going to be difficult in the race. We would have liked to be on pole, but we are happy with the position.”
Lorenzo is confident he can make the softer tyre last the race distance, if chosen, but also warned there would be a big drop off in performance after seven laps.
