Sandro Cortese moved to the top of the timesheets during a dry and blustery second Friday practice session for the British Moto3 Grand Prix at Silverstone.

After this morning's rain, the afternoon session took place on a dry track, but with the ever-present wind initially blowing dark clouds over the circuit.

Spots of rain duly fell early in the 40-minute session, prompting red and white flags, but developed into nothing stronger - allowing a full slick-tyre session as bright sunshine descended in the closing stages.

Rookie race winner Romano Fenati led the early stages, but was surpassed by championship leader Cortese (KTM) and Efren Vazquez (Honda) heading into the closing stages.

Cortese and Vazquez swapped the top spot several times before the session ended with the German on top by 0.382s.

Fenati finished 0.465s from Cortese on his FTR Honda, in third, with fellow newcomer Alex Rins fourth for the Estrella Galicia 0,0 Suter-Honda team.

Cortese holds a seven-point lead over Maverick Vinales heading into round six. Blusens FTR-Honda rider Vinales, the only double Moto3 winner to date, took a late fifth place (+ 0.547s) this afternoon.

Home star Danny Kent, fastest in the wet this morning, steered his Red Bull KTM to sixth in the dry.
