Moto3 World Championship leader Maverick Vinales broke 0.737s clear of the field at the end of Thursday's second practice for the Dutch TT at Assen.

The FTR Honda rider, who leads the championship by two points from Sandro Cortese, moved narrowly ahead in the final four minutes, then destroyed any opposition by posting a 1m 44.312s flyer on his penultimate lap.

Vinales has won half of the opening six Moto3 races, including the two rounds leading up to Assen, but suffered a DNF in France,

Cortese had led a Red Bull KTM one-two in the morning Assen session, but managed only fourth this afternoon - 0.994s behind Vinales - then fell on his slow down lap.

Closest to Vinales this afternoon was Suter Honda rider Miguel Oliveira, with Niklas Ajo claiming a better than usual third for TT Motions to be the leading KTM rider.

French rookie Alan Techer had been leading the way heading into the final five minutes, but lost three places in the space of a few seconds and was ultimately bumped down to sixth as Cortese and Luis Salom also squeezed ahead of the Technomag-CIP rider.

Final practice and qualifying takes place on Friday.
