Sandro Cortese led a Red Bull KTM one-two during qualifying for the Dutch Moto3 Grand Prix at Assen on Friday.

The young German, who starts round seven just two-points behind title leader Maverick Vinales, made clever use of traffic to help tow his way to a third pole of the year by 0.259s from team-mate Danny Kent.

Kent set his best time at the head of a pack of riders that included Cortese, Hector Faubel and Niklas Ajo. The Englishman credited a new chassis, the same as Cortese, for his first front row start.

Rookie Niccol? Antonelli also claimed his debut front row, courtesy of third place. The Gresini FTR Honda rider lapped 0.343s from Cortese to split Kent and Aspar's Faubel at the end of the session.

Unlike his rivals, Vinales spent much of the 40-minute session riding alone on track, and took third place on his penultimate lap. However the last lap improvements by Kent, Cortese et al pushed him down to sixth, where he will start.

Warm-up and the race will be held on Saturday.
