A sliding Marc Marquez sliced daringly through traffic heading into the final chicane to snatch pole position from title rival Pol Espargaro in qualifying at Assen on Saturday.

Espargaro had led every session heading into qualifying, but was to be left 0.455s from Marquez at the close of qualifying - despite Marquez high-siding shortly after his pole lap.

Marquez, who also fell during practice, insisted he was unhurt in the incident and will lead a front row of 2012 race winners with Andrea Iannone qualifying 0.823s behind in third.

Fourth place Randy Krummenacher (Kalex) was over one-second from Marquez, with Dominique Aegerter (Suter) and Simone Corsi (FTR) completing the second row.

Marquez will start Saturday's race with a six-point lead over Espargaro and Thomas Luthi. Luthi could only manage tenth place in qualifying for Interwetten Suter.
