Moto3: Vinales top in Friday practice

Maverick Vinales fastest during Friday practice (2) for the German Moto3 Grand Prix at Sachsenring.
Moto3 title leader Maverick Vinales overcame spots of rain to deny Jakub Kornfeil a surprise sweep of Friday practice for the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring.

FTR-Honda star Vinales, who holds a seven-point lead over local star Sandro Cortese, recovered from a fast fall through the downhill right-hander this morning to edge out Kornfeil by 0.162s on his penultimate lap.

The last eight minutes of the 40-minute session saw rain flags raised as spots of rain began falling from the ever-darkening skies, but Aspar's Hector Faubel was another late improver – snatching fourth.

Between Kornfeil and Faubel was Cortese's Red Bull KTM team-mate Danny Kent, who took his first podium last Saturday at Assen and joined Kornfeil, Vinales and Louis Rossi in leading the session.

Rookie Alex Rins finished ahead of Le Mans winner Rossi in fifth, with Cortese lacking 0.661s in seventh place.

Aside from Kornfeil, surprise of the day was the pace of Danny Webb, who claimed seventh and eighth on Friday - the Sachsenring twists helping to soothe the Mahindra's lack of power.

Heavier rain began falling once the session had finished.

It just goes to show how much difference an extra few kph make when at a twisty circuit where top end is less important, Webb and the Mahindra can be suddenly up in eighth. Terol has done nothing in Moto2 since losing the speed advantage he had in 125s although even in Moto2 there are still quite significant differences in top speed despite the spec engine, partly due to rider size but also aerodynamics and ram air systems. Many people are quick to slag of riders without taking into account the huge difference such factors play, especially in a close field where a couple of tenths can drop you many places.
