Moto2: Marquez snatches late pole at Sachsenring, Espargaro 17th

7 July 2012

By Lisa Lewis

Marc Marquez took pole position on his CatalunyaCaixa Repsol Suter for round eight of the Moto2 championship at the Sachsenring on Saturday, his sixth of the season.

The session started with the track drying from the earlier downpours. Just as a dry line started to emerge, the rain returned with 33 minutes of the session remaining and then continued to dry for a second time with the best times coming at the end of the session.

Marquez crossed the line with a time of 1:34.503 and said it was down to his “good confidence on the bike” as he snatched pole by 0.045 from fellow Spaniard and Suter rider Julian Simon, who starts second for the Blusens Avintia team, his best qualifying of the season, his previous best being 7th in Estoril.

Finnish rider Mika Kallio put in his best performance of the season to complete the front row for Marc VDS (Kalex) miles ahead of his team-mate Scott Redding who appeared to be lacking confidence way down the order in 26th.

Early pace setter Xavier Simeon crashed his Tech3 towards the end of the session and had to settle for a fourth place grid start, fellow Tech3 rider Bradley Smith also suffered a crash and could only watch as he plummeted down the order to ninth, which he found “very frustrating”.

Gino Rea had the honour of being the best placed British rider at the end of the session. Rea,who rode well in the rain at Le Mans earlier in the season before being hit by Zarco, qualifies fifth for the Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 team (Suter) after being a frontrunner throughout.

Tom Luthi improved late on to qualify his Interwetten Paddock Suter in sixth, while Ant West once again showed his 'rain master' credentials putting his QMMF Racing bike at the front of the third row, in seventh.

Alex De Angelis will start eighth for the NGM Forward Racing team (FTR)with Andrea Iannone completing the top ten for the Speed Master team.

Pol Espargaro, who had dominated the practice sessions never really figured in proceedings and could only manage a late dash to 17th aboard his Pons 40 HP Tuenti (Kalex).

Johann Zarco will hope for a good start from 14th for JiR, while previous Moto2 champion Toni Elias starts 18th for the Mapfre Aspar team, his team-mate Nico Terol finished the session 24th.

The top German finisher was Max Neukirchner for Kiefer racing down in 22nd.
