Stoner leads dry Sachsenring warm-up

Casey Stoner fastest despite a fall during warm-up for the German MotoGP at Sachsenring.
Reigning world champion, joint 2012 leader and Sachsenring pole sitter Casey Stoner set the fastest lap time in dry and bright conditions during morning warm-up for the German MotoGP - despite a fall.

The Repsol Honda rider, second to team-mate Dani Pedrosa in the only previous dry session on Friday morning, was fast from the start of the session, running the harder rear tyre.

Stoner set his best time on lap 8 of 9, but then fell at low speed when the rear of his RCV spun-out at full lean through the long right hander near the start of the lap, with two-mines of the session to go.

Stoner's best lap time was 0.2s from Pedrosa's Friday best.

Pedrosa, who will start third on the grid, closed to within 0.026s of his team-mate this morning with joint title leader Jorge Lorenzo 0.392s from Stoner in third. Lorenzo will start fifth on the grid.

Tech 3 Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow and Lorenzo's team-mate Ben Spies - who starts second - claimed fourth and fifth places, but a sizeable 0.470s and 0.646s from Stoner at one of the shortest tracks on the calendar.

Nicky Hayden was again the top Ducati in sixth place (+0.767s) with Tech 3's Andrea Dovizioso and LCR Honda's home star Stefan Bradl the final riders within one second of the top.

Ducati riders Hector Barbera and Valentino Rossi completed the top ten, followed by Gresini Honda's Alvaro Bautista - who starts last due to his Assen penalty.

Aspar's Randy de Puniet was the leading CRT rider in 13th place, just 0.188s from Bautista and 1.344s from Stoner.

The start of the session was delayed slightly in order to repair a damaged air fence.

MotoGP will be the second race of the day - after Moto2 and before Moto3 - to avoid a TV clash with the British F1 Grand Prix.

The earlier start time should increase the chances of a dry race, with rain expected later in the afternoon.

its interesting that stoner was .2 off pedro's other dry time while pedro was on the softs. also jlo was nearly a second off stoner this morning while both on hards , then still couldn't match him when he changed to softs for the final 5 minute sprint . stoner used hards all morning while using softs all weekend. with the chatter worse on the right side he seems to be looking good with only 3 right turns to worry about.
