Stoner: We’ve gained five points since Assen

"If we look at it from before Assen we've still actually gained five points" - Casey Stoner.
MotoGP champion Casey Stoner has played down the points lost during his last lap fall at the German Grand Prix.

Stoner, who had bridged a 25-point gap to Jorge Lorenzo when the Yamaha rider was taken down at the previous Assen round, fell from his Repsol Honda whilst pushing team-mate Dani Pedrosa for victory with just two turns to go.

The Australian's first self-inflicted DNF since joining HRC at the start of 2011 saw him slip from first to third in the standings, 20 points from Lorenzo.

“If we look at it from before Assen we've still actually gained five points,” said Stoner at Mugello on Thursday.

“The points I took off Jorge at Assen we pretty much immediately lost the next week. Little bit disappointed about the Sachsenring as we were confident in the race and everything had gone well that weekend.

“But it wasn't to be. I went into the bottom of the hill and let off the brakes a little early to try and gain some corner speed and took too much weight off the front. I was definitely disappointed with the crash, but in general we're happy with our pace at the moment.”

Indeed, Stoner believes that if he can continue his recent pace then he will soon be back at the sharp end of the standings.

“If we can show that sort of pace until the end of the season, then we shouldn't have to worry so much about the points gap at the moment,” he said.

Stoner will be seeking his fourth win of the season at Mugello this weekend, a circuit where he won for home manufacturer Ducati in 2009 and finished third for Honda last season.

“We've always been quite fast here at Mugello. We've had quite a few podiums here and everything had gone quite well last year. We were happy with our pace, but it went a little wrong with tyre pressures, so we had nothing at the end of the race,” he recalled.

“Hopefully this year will be a different thing. The last two races we have worked very well with trying to save the tyres, trying to get them to work as best as we can over race distance.

“It's definitely one of the tracks I enjoy the most.”

Stoner is retiring from MotoGP at the end of the year. Moto2 star arc Marquez was officially announced as his 2013 replacement on Thursday.
