Ben Spies's hopes of making it onto the podium for the Italian Grand Prix have taken a knock after a fall during qualifying consigned him to ninth on the grid.

The American had been keen to challenge towards the head of the grid in an effort to replicate a similar pace to that of team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, but lost time with a fall at Correntaio with 20mins to go.

Though he made it back out onto the circuit before the session had concluded, severe brake vibration would prevent him from going any better than ninth on the factory Yamaha.

"During the qualifying we changed to the soft tyre and tried a different rear shock at the same time, I'm not sure if that was the problem but I lost the front and we crashed," he lamented.

"When we got to the back up bike we still had plenty of time but something got picked up on the brake rotor, dirt or rubber or something and the brakes were vibrating horribly so I couldn't brake as late as I needed to.

"We did the best we could and the bike is working really well so I think we could have dipped into the 47s on the soft tyres."
