Moto2: Torres in at Aspar

Jordi Torres takes over the seat vacated by Toni Elias at Aspar.
The Mapfre Aspar Moto2 team has announced that Jordi Torres will take the place of former champion Toni Elias from the Indianapolis round onwards.

Elias, the inaugural Moto2 champion with Gresini, parted ways with the Aspar team after the recent Mugello event, having struggled to adapt to the Suter chassis.

Fellow Spaniard Torres will take Elias' seat alongside Nico Terol for the remainder of the year, whilst also continuing in the Spanish championship.

Torres - who helped perform testing duties for the Avintia Blusens MotoGP team this winter - made his Moto2 debut at Catalunya 2010, rode a partial Moto2 season for Aspar at the end of 2011 and competed as a stand-in for Tech 3 at this year's Catalunya round (pictured).

However the reigning Spanish Moto2 champion and current series leader is yet to score a point in his twelve grand prix starts.

"Finally I have another serious opportunity to compete in the Moto2 World Championship,” said Torres. “I think it will be better for me than last year because I know all the tracks now. The whole experience last season helped me to mature as a rider and that is going to help me make the most of this chance.

“I'll be competing in both championships [Spanish and World] at the same time so I will have to work hard to get used to using a different bike and tyre in each. I am going into it with an open mind and my objective is merely to make gradual progress.

“I know this is a great opportunity for me and I am going to fight hard to make it work."

Elias is being linked with a return to Gresini's Moto2 team, which would be bad news for either Gino Rea or Ratthapark Wilairot.

However the move would make little sense on paper since Gresini also uses the same Suter chassis design that Elias struggled with at Aspar.

The Elias/Gresini rumour has been fuelled by Fausto Gresini's post Mugello comment: "Some important decisions need to be made because we cannot continue for the rest of the season in this way".

But a switch from Showa to Ohlins suspension, rather than change in the rider line-up, is an alternative possibility.

Gresini switched from a Moriwaki to Suter chassis earlier in the season, but has struggled to score regular points. Elias won the 2010 title with Moriwaki.

This weekend's US MotoGP round features only the premier-class.

Ha ha, What a load of ignorance in this board. Coming here and reading the expert comments is sure free comedy, lol. Let's see... (CEV) Spanish championship Moto2 class. 31 riders, 10 are Spanish and the rest from all over the world. Point standings, top 10: 18 TORRES FERNANDEZ, JORDI SPA 40 RAMOS ALVARO, ROMAN SPA 9 NOYES , KENNY USA 92 MARINELARENA, ALEJANDRO SPA 7 RIVAS FERNANDEZ, DANIEL SPA 55 SYAHRIN, HAFIZH MAL 44 ODENDAAL, STEVEN RSA 64 HERNANDEZ VEGA, SANTIAGO COL 71 KOYAMA , TOMOYOSHI JPN 20 RAFFIN GIMENEZ, JESKO SWI There must be a good reason why they chose him, unlike Helena which was a more of a crazy decision. BTW, there's a LOT of foreign teams in the Spanish championship Moto2 class. Can anyone with a brain explain why?
