Monster Yamaha Tech 3 star Andrea Dovizioso fears that his chances of securing a factory M1 seat will be thwarted by the return of Valentino Rossi.

A Repsol Honda from 2009-2011, Dovizioso switched to Tech 3 with the specific goal of graduating to the Factory Yamaha squad for 2013.

The Italian has already amassed more podiums (four) than any previous Tech 3 rider in a single season and holds fourth place, as the top satellite rider, in the present championship standings.

Yamaha has already re-signed title leader Jorge Lorenzo, but present team-mate Ben Spies announced last week that he will leave the team.

That has opened the factory door for Dovizioso - but only if seven time MotoGP champion Rossi turns it down.

"[Moving to the Factory Yamaha team] is what I expected, but it looks like Valentino is really close," Dovizioso told MotoGP.com. "So I don't know exactly; it's not fixed.

"This is really bad for me because I swapped to Yamaha because I believed I can find a place in the factory team.

"We've done the best we can this year and we've had four podiums. But it looks like this is not enough to get that place, but we'll see in the next two weeks."

Should Rossi move back to Yamaha, Dovizioso's options could include replacing the #46 at Ducati, remaining at Tech 3 alongside rookie Bradley Smith or returning to Honda with the Gresini team.

Dovizioso has taken one MotoGP win and finished a best of third in the world championship, in 2011.
