Moto2: Gino Rea keeps Gresini seat for Indianapolis
13 August 2012
Gino Rea will continue to ride for the Gresini Moto2 team during this weekend's Indianapolis Grand Prix.
Rumours that the Englishman's place was under threat grew after the previous Mugello round, just before the Moto2/Moto3 summer break, when team principal Fausto Gresini was quoted in Rea's press release as saying:
“I am so disappointed and I think some important decisions need to be made because we cannot continue for the rest of the season in this way, without challenging for results.”
With Gresini's former Moto2 champion Toni Elias splitting from Aspar at around the same time, rumours spread that the Spaniard could return at the expense of Rea - despite Elias struggling with the same Suter chassis.
But Rea has now been confirmed at Gresini, which switched from Moriwaki to Suter earlier in the year, for this weekend's event - though the Elias rumour is far from fully extinguished since the Spaniard is currently on MotoGP stand-in duty for Pramac Ducati.
Former WSS race winner Rea has taken one-point so far this year, with team-mate Ratthapark Wilairot scoring eight points.
“I really need to push myself to the limit and get a result at Indianapolis,” said Rea. “It won't be easy because once again this is another completely new circuit to me but I want and need to score a good finish. I have worked hard to get my physical and mental energy levels up over the break and I am ready for this important challenge.”
Gresini knows he is yet to see Rea's full potential transferred into results.
“Through a series of unfortunate circumstances Gino has so far been unable to show his true value on the track so it is important that he works hard to do it at Indianapolis,” he said. “It is another new circuit for him but with the help of the team he should be able to achieve his objective of coming home with a positive result.”
