Crutchlow shrugs off crash, happy with improvements

17 August 2012

Cal Crutchlow feels he and the Tech 3 Yamaha team have made an evident 'jump' from his last outing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after setting the sixth best time in free practice.

The British rider endured one of his tougher events at Indianapolis last season by finishing in 11th, but while a crash during FP1 set him back initially, he bounced back to complete the sixth best time of the day in FP2.

Shrugging off the circumstances of the accident around a particularly slippery circuit, Crutchlow was pleased to prove competitive at a venue he otherwise struggled at in 2011.

"I think we're doing a good job,” he said. “The jump we've made from last year to this year is a big one, more than anyone else. I'm pleased enough at the minute to be running where we're running. Last year I finished I don't know where here, 12th, 10th or something like that.

“So already we've made a big improvement. We're already thereabouts with the time that we did last year, and the track's not in as good condition as last year. I think we're making improvements every time we come to the circuits."

“The tarmac's slick, don't get me wrong,” he added, regarding his tumble. “It's amazing; it's an amazing place because the last corner to Turn 4 is unbelievable grip; really, really good. You can really use the angle of these GP bikes. Then you get from Turn 5 to the rest of the circuit, and it's really slick. I think it just needs a little cleaning up.

“We'll clean it up with the more laps we do. I don't think it had anything to do with the crash. I think I hit a wet patch, and that was just unfortunate at that time of the free practice this morning."
