Andrea Dovizioso has his sights firmly set on fighting for his fifth podium of the season in Sunday's Indianapolis MotoGP, after qualifying on the front row for only the second time this year.

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 star, tipped to replace Valentino Rossi at Ducati next season, took advantage of mistakes by Casey Stoner and Ben Spies to snatch third on the grid, 0.422s from pole sitter Dani Pedrosa.

Title leader Jorge Lorenzo will start second for the Factory Yamaha team

"Honestly I didn't really expect to be on the front row today because Ben and Casey have both been very fast all weekend and I knew it was going to be difficult to finish in front of them," said Dovi.

"I am sorry for what happened to them but I am really happy to be on the front row because that is always important. It is even more at this track because the first section is very tight and it will be important to try and break with the leading group.

"For sure, Dani has the best pace. Also, Ben is so fast, although I don't know his condition for tomorrow. But we improved a lot. We made a good job, and I think we have a pace for fighting for the podium.

"I don't know exactly the position, and the race here is always strange, is so slippery. The tyre drop is really particular about will be interesting, and I think with a nice battle tomorrow."

Team-mate Cal Crutchlow will start seventh.
