Lorenzo laps with new chassis, engine on Wednesday
4 September 2012
MotoGP title leader Jorge Lorenzo put further laps on the new Yamaha chassis during day one of private testing at Aragon on Tuesday, which he finished 0.488s behind championship rival Dani Pedrosa (Honda).
Branded as a 'first 2013 prototype' ahead of its Brno test debut, Lorenzo clearly hopes the new chassis will be ready to race before the end of this season.
For that to happen, it needs to offer an advantage over the present design. Lorenzo felt that was not the case at Brno and remained unsure after day one at Aragon.
"We tried the new chassis. So far we haven't found a positive or a negative thing. We have to keep trying and do more laps to see," the official MotoGP website quotes Lorenzo as saying.
The Spaniard also revealed he will try a new M1 engine on Wednesday. Lorenzo has already 'opened' five of his six permitted engines for 2012, one having been lost when he was taken out by Alvaro Bautista at Assen.
Lorenzo said: "Tomorrow we are going to try the new engine. Maybe this will give us a little bit more power on the straight. This is our weaker point - we are losing almost 5km/h to Dani. Dani is also very light, but for sure his engine is a little bit faster."
Lorenzo, the 2010 world champion, is 13 points ahead of fellow Spaniard Pedrosa with six rounds to go.
