Moto3: Fenati goes top despite bizarre fall

14 September 2012

Italy's Romano Fenati shot to the top of the time sheets during the second free Moto3 practice session at the San Marino Grand Prix this afternoon.

The Team Italia FMI rider put in a flying final lap on his FTR Honda to demote Blusens Avintia star Maverick Vinales to second position, posting a fastest time of 1m 49.965s to go top by 1.032s in the damp and blustery conditions at Misano.

However, Fenati was left red-faced after finishing his superb final lap when he crashed out in a bizarre fall at the first corner on his slowing down lap.

It appears as though Fenati's right knee-slider worked loose before catching in his rear wheel, causing the bike to catapult him off in a mini high-side.

Behind Vinales, German rider Jonas Folger was third fastest on the Kalex KTM, 1.123s off the fastest time set by Fenati, with Kevin Calia and Alberto Moncayo the top five.

Britain's Danny Kent was sixth on the Red Bull KTM, over three seconds behind Fenati, with Alex Rins seventh on the Suter Honda and championship leader, Sandro Cortese, eighth quickest.

Jakub Kornfeil and Zulfahmi Kairuddin – who was fastest in FP1 – completed the top 10.

Danny Webb ended the session 16th fastest, finishing ahead of Spain's Luis Salom, who is currently third in the championship standings.
