Marc Marquez took pole position for the CatalunyaCaixa Repsol team in qualifying for the San Marino Moto2 Grand Prix from the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, his seventh pole of the season.
Championship leader Marquez set the pole time of 1m 38.242 late in the session after vying with Pol Espargaro for the lead throughout qualifying.
Espargaro crashed out with five minutes remaining while chasing what could have been his fourth consecutive pole for Pons 40 HP Tuenti and had to play a waiting game for the chequered flag to see where he would finish, and remained in second at the end of the session, although his bike was absent from parc ferme.
Scott Redding will start from third on the grid for Marc VDS, his fourth front-row start of the season, saying in parc ferme after qualifying that it was “nice to start on the front row after the mistake in Brno”.
Takaaki Nakagami came very close to making the front row with some very fast laps for Italtrans but had to settle for fourth while Andrea Iannone, with a very loud special livery advertising the film Step Up 4, will start fifth for Speed Up.
Tom Luthi is sixth on the grid for Interwetten-Paddock and Tito Rabat seventh for for Pons 40 HP Tuenti. Ratthapark Wilairot starts from eighth for Thai Honda Gresini while Mika Kallio, the only rider to score points at every race so far this season, will aim to maintain that record from ninth.
Bradley Smith starts from tenth for Tech3 and fellow Brit Gino Rea, who crashed his Federal Oil Gresini, is 23rd on the grid, but less than a second and a half adrift of the pole time, a reminder of the closeness of the class.
Former 125cc champions Julian Simon and Nico Terol start 12th and 24th respectively, home rider Alex De Angelis finished qualifying at his home race down in 21st for NGM Forward racing.
Simone Corsi, who was fastest for Ioda in the morning session, crashed during qualifying and starts from 13th while Johann Zarco also crashed out with ten minutes to go and fell down the order as the session drew to a close, eventually qualifying 15th for JIR.
