Electronics giant Magneti Marelli has finalised a deal to offer all teams in MotoGP the opportunity to use its latest ECU from 2013.
It is seen as the first step towards the introduction of a spec-ECU for motorcycling's top tier championship.
The Italian company has completed a four-year agreement with MotoGP's commercial rights holders Dorna.
Magneti Marelli will make its highest specification electronic control system available to all competitors, backed up by a permanent team of technicians at each tack.
The news will come as a boost for the Claiming Rules Teams, with electronics proving a major source of weakness for many CRT riders this season.
However, teams will still have the option of developing and running their own systems next year at least.
A research and development centre will be set up at Magneti Marelli's headquarters in Bologna specifically to enhance its MotoGP commitments over the next four years.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, Dorna CEO, said the deal represents a “major step” forward in the blue riband championship.
“I cannot hide the fact that I am very happy with this new co-operation with Magneti Marelli,” he said.
“The agreement reached with the Italian company merely validates MotoGP as a competition that incorporates and encourages the latest and most innovative technology.
“The experience of this company, which has spent many years at the highest level of competition in motorsport, represents a major step in the premier-class of two-wheel racing.”
Magneti Marelli's electronic control system includes an engine and chassis control unit with inboard datalogger, as well as the relevant tuning and data analysis tools, dashboard and handlebar toggle switch.
It will be provided free to any team requesting the system.

Plans for a spec-ECU have been met with varying degrees of resistance from the leading factory MotoGP teams, with HRC the most vocal opponent.
