Moto3: Vinales counting on Cortese 'error'

26 September 2012

Maverick Vinales is targeting his sixth victory of the season as he maintains his pursuit of Moto3 championship leader Sandro Cortese.

The Blusens Avintia rider is currently second in the series, 46 points behind Cortese despite winning five races on the FTR Honda this year.

Vinales looked every inch a champion in the middle part of the season, winning three races on the bounce before disaster struck with a pair of non-finishes that cost the Spanish starlet dear.

And while he is refusing to throw in the towel, he concedes it will take a “mistake” from Cortese to provide him with fresh hope of snatching the world title.

“The championship has become an uphill struggle and we aren't just depending on ourselves now we need to hope for a mistake from the leader,” said Vinales.

“I am going to attack at the Aragón GP for that reason. Strategic riding is useless now. I want to win as many races as possible, force Cortese to the limit and finish the season in the best way possible.

“I like the Motorland track a lot, although it has a very long straight for which you need a good engine,” he added.

“I hope to have one this weekend and get back to the top step of the podium.

“Riding at home again motivates me a lot, and I'm sure that the fans will push me to take a great result.”
