Ducati's Valentino Rossi says eighth place in this afternoon's free practice session at Aragon does not reflect his potential for Sunday's race.

Rossi, who finished on the rostrum at Misano, experienced gearbox trouble with his Desmosedici and lost valuable track time in FP2 as a result.

The Italian's fastest lap in 2m 02.412s was 2.193s behind Ben Spies, but Rossi expects to be much stronger at the Spanish track over the course of the weekend.

"We had a problem with the gearbox on the bike we were using, and I lost a bit of time in the garage," he said.

"We had to prepare the second one in a hurry, and then I rode with that.

"It's a shame because with these conditions, the tyres only get up to temperature after a few laps, so when I was able to go back out, I didn't have time to push he," he added.

"Our potential is certainly better than this."

Although Rossi expects further wet conditions to dominate tomorrow, weather forecasts suggest a dry race on Sunday and the Yamaha-bound MotoGP legend is determined to cement a strong grid position.

"We can be more competitive, and we'll try tomorrow in qualifying, which could be wet like today according to the forecasts," said Rossi.

"We'll try to get a good starting position and then we'll see for Sunday, because it looks as if the race might be dry."
