Simone Corsi has taken an unexpected pole position in the Moto2 qualifying session at Aragon, his first in the class and fourth of his career.

The Came IodaRacing rider put in a series of strong laps over the closing minutes of the session and came out top with a lap of 1m 54.343, snatching pole from Pol Espargaro, who was second for Kalex, just +0.191 behind aboard his Pons 40 HP Tuenti machine. Andrea Iannone completes the front row for Speed Master.

The lack of dry practice time made for an unusual grid with Claudio Corti fourth for Italtrans, while Jordi Torres ended the session fifth for Mafpre Aspar, The Spaniard who topped the standings with 14 minutes remaining suffered a fast crash with two minutes to go, losing the chance to improve his time. A late fast lap saw his team mate Nico Terol also make the second row, qualifying sixth.

Marc Marquez starts seventh, after a quiet session the CatalunyaCaixa Repsol Suter rider had it all to do, he was pushing hard to set a fast lap and lost control of his bike, although he didn't fall the lap was ruined leaving him starting from the front of row three.

Joining him on the third row are Bradley Smith, whose late effort placed the Tech3 eighth, while fellow Brit Scott Redding starts from ninth for Marc VDS.

Johann Zarco, who was fastest in the second and third practice sessions rounds out the top ten qualifiers for JIR (Motobi).

Espargaro's team mate Tito Rabat stalked Marquez around the track to set a lap fast enough to put him 11th on the grid while Mika Kallio concluded the session 12th for Marc VDS.

Kiefer stand-in rider Mike Di Meglio starts 17th, Alex De Angelis qualified 18th for Forward Racing. A big crash early on hampered Tom Luthi, who finds himself down in 19th for the Interwetten-Paddock Suter team. Ant West showed early promise after his fast sessions in the wet but starts 20th for QMMF.

Former 125cc champion and Moto2 runner-up Julian Simon is 21st on the grid for Blusens while British rider Gino Rea's Suter had been in the top five throughout the wet practices for the Federal Oil sponsored Gresini Team but qualified down in 22nd in dry conditions.
