Moto3: Salom joins factory KTM team for 2013
8 October 2012
The factory Red Bull KTM Ajo team has signed Luis Salom for the 2013 Moto3 World Championship.
Salom has won his first two grands prix this season, riding a Kalex-KTM for RW Racing, and has now moved up to second in the standings behind only present Red Bull KTM rider Sandro Cortese.
Cortese, who holds a commanding 51-point lead with four rounds to go, has already confirmed that he will move up to Moto2 next year.
"Having a chance to be a part of the Red Bull KTM Ajo team is a dream come true for me", said 21-year-old Spaniard Salom. "This is also important for my family and all the people who work with me.
“Competing in a factory team makes me calmer and I am more confident about what comes in the future. I am grateful for Aki, Red Bull and KTM for the possibility they have given me.
"I truly am ready to start fighting in my new team starting from the first tests until the last race."
Salom has finished first or second in the last four events, in addition to four previous podiums, moving him above pre-season favourite Maverick Vinales (FTR-Honda) in the Championship.
Team leader Aki Ajo is convinced Salom has what it takes.
"It was clear for me already at quite early stage in the summer who is that kind of rider who is able to fight for the victories next season", said Ajo, "Luis is the one. He has an experience, good pace and he has shown his maturity and rationality as a rider when it comes to the tough fights on the last laps."
Danny Kent currently rides alongside Cortese. The Englishman is yet to confirm his plans for 2013. Kent is sixth in the championship, with one podium.
Cortese has signed a two-year deal to ride for the new 'Intact GP' team running a Kalex chassis in Moto2.
