Lorenzo: Stoner out of our control

11 October 2012

MotoGP World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo is relaxed about the potential influence Casey Stoner's return could have on the 2012 title outcome.

Lorenzo takes a commanding 33-point advantage over Dani Pedrosa into the final four rounds, starting this weekend at Motegi, an event that also marks the return from injury of Pedrosa's Honda team-mate and reigning world champion Casey Stoner.

"This is something that you cannot control,” replied Lorenzo, when asked about the possibility of losing points to Stoner.

“If Casey is fast enough he can win, and can take points off both Dani and me.

“One thing we can control is our performance and this is what we will try to control over these races."

Yamaha star Lorenzo has claimed first or second in all the races he has finished this season, his only non-score occurring when he was the innocent victim of Alvaro Bautista's first turn mistake at Assen.

Lorenzo's main goal for the remaining rounds is to continue his podium form, whilst picking up further wins when possible.

"These three [flyaway] races are going to be really important for the championship and our goal is to keep in the same line; always trying to fight for pole positions, for podiums and victories.

“This is my goal, and if it is possible to win the races I am going to try, and if not then podiums will be OK in the last four races.”

Lorenzo, winner at Motegi in 2009 and second to Pedrosa last year, expects the new 1000cc M1 to be better suited to the stop-go Motegi layout.

"Normally here for Yamaha it is not so simple because we have some difficulties in acceleration, but we have good braking and corner entry, which are our strong points,” he said.

“Last year we made second place and finished not so far from Dani, and this year with the 1000cc we are a bit more competitive so we will try to be even closer."

Stoner has said he does not expect Honda to impose team orders.

Free practice for the Japanese MotoGP starts on Friday morning.
