Lorenzo leads Motegi warm-up

Jorge Lorenzo fastest in warm-up for the Japanese MotoGP at Motegi.
MotoGP title leader and Motegi pole sitter Jorge Lorenzo led the way during this morning's warm-up session for the Japanese Grand Prix.

The Factory Yamaha star moved to the head of the standings just before the midway point of the 20-minutes and kept control to the end.

Lorenzo's only problems occurred when he was attempting his practice starts after the session ended, one of which ended in a stall.

Championship rival Dani Pedrosa spent the middle part of the session down in seventh, but rose to second place - 0.197s from Lorenzo - on his tenth and final lap.

The session was the best of the weekend for Pedrosa's returning Repsol Honda team-mate and reigning world champion Casey Stoner, who finished in third place and just 0.254s from the top.

The Australian, making his comeback from injury, qualified in seventh.

Alvaro Bautista celebrated his new Gresini contract by leading the session prior to Lorenzo, on his way to an eventual fourth place.

Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda) and front row qualifier Cal Crutchlow (Tech 3 Yamaha) completed a top six covered by 0.499s. Nicky Hayden was the top Ducati in eighth.

Lorenzo's team-mate Ben Spies, who will head row two of the grid, was just tenth fastest.

The session saw a fiery fall for Randy de Puniet, whose Aspar ART had to be extinguished by marshals after a low speed tumble at the hairpin.

The hard front/soft rear was again the preferred tyre choice, although some riders could gamble on a hard rear for the race, depending on the weather.
