Sandro Cortese wins inaugural Moto3 title

21 October 2012

Sandro Cortese has been crowned the inaugural Moto3 world champion after a last-gasp victory in Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider overtook home hero Zulfahmi Khairuddin at the very final turn to win his fourth race of the year by 0.028s.

With Maverick Vinales not taking part, the 22-year-old German only needed a podium finish even if third in points Luis Salom won the race. Salom finished fourth.

Rain spots fell during the second half of the grand prix, but it went the full 18 lap distance.

Moto3, featuring 250cc four-strokes, replaced the 125cc (two-stroke) World Championship at the start of this year.

2012 is Cortese's eighth season in grand prix. He will move to Moto2 next year. Two rounds remain before the end of the 2012 season.

Rain began pouring down shortly after the the race had finished, delaying the start of Moto2.
