Moto3: Folger tops practice in Australia

Jonas Folger fastest in Friday practice for the Australian Moto3 Grand Prix at Phillip Island.
Aspar's race-winning mid-season signing Jonas Folger set the Friday free practice pace for the Australian Moto3 Grand Prix at Phillip Island.

The young German saved his best for last, setting the fastest lap of the day - a 1m 39.213s - on his 15th and final lap of the afternoon with the Kalex KTM.

Red Bull KTM's Sandro Cortese, crowned as the inaugural Moto3 champion last Sunday at Sepang, finished second quickest to his countryman by 0.232s. Cortese led the morning session with a 1m 39.902s.

Former title contender Maverick Vinales, who walked out on Blusens Avintia one week ago at Sepang, was back on track with the team at Phillip Island.

Fourth with a fall this morning, five-time Moto3 winner Vinales concluded day one in third place, just 0.282s from the top.

After his Malaysian no-show, Vinales is eight points behind Luis Salom in the fight for second in the standings.

A further half-second from Vinales was Cortese's team-mate Danny Kent, with Romano Fenati fifth and last weekend's debut podium finisher Zulfahmi Khairuddin in sixth (+1.112s).

Salom was just eleventh this afternoon for RW Racing, but only 0.2s from Fenati.

Mahindra's Danny Webb was not on track this afternoon following engine issues in the morning.

The Englishman later confirmed via Twitter that he won't be back on Saturday: "Pulled out off this weekend's race due to lack of spares to fix the mechanical problems we have had over the last 3 races!!"
