Rossi eighth, striving for further progress

26 October 2012

Ducati's Valentino Rossi will aim to make further progress on Saturday after concluding the opening day at Phillip Island in eighth position.

The MotoGP legend was content with his initial performance but Rossi is seeking a solution that will enable him to ride faster through the Australian circuit's high-speed corner without sacrificing acceleration.

Rossi's best lap of 1m 32.030s was two seconds adrift of Casey Stoner but 0.328s behind LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl in seventh.

“In the end, this first day didn't go too badly, considering that we're not so far from [Stefan] Bradl and [Alvaro] Bautista,” he said.

“We improved the bike's set-up and I was able to go quite a bit faster in the afternoon compared to this morning.

“I also did some nice laps with the used tyre, which is important,” added Rossi.

“Tomorrow we'll try to make another step forward and look for a balance that allows me to ride well in the fast corners without losing too much traction in acceleration.”

Rossi will make a final decision on his tyre choice for Sunday's race following further analysis of his options on Saturday.

“Here we do lots of accelerating on the left side, so the tyre temperature goes up and the tyres begin to slide more and more,” he said.

“We'll see tomorrow. We'll have to continue improving as we did between today's two sessions, and then we'll also decide which tyre to use.”
