Alvaro Bautista was sixth fastest overall at Phillip Island on the Gresini Honda despite encountering his fair share of set-up problems with the RCV.

Bautista was unable to utilise the full power of the 1000cc prototype due to rear traction issues and changes made by the team in the afternoon failed to have the desired effect.

However, Bautista - whose best lap of 1m 31.616s was just 0.158 behind the Yamaha of Andrea Dovizioso - is confident he has a strong base setting to work from as the Spaniard attempts to improve suspension and electronics settings on Saturday.

"We worked intensively today on the base setting of the bike but ran into a problem this morning with the rear end moving around a lot in corner exit, which meant I couldn't use the full range of power because the bike was too nervous," he said.

"We changed a few things in the afternoon to try and solve this issue but if anything we made it worse so we had to go back a step.

"We have a lot of work to do with the electronics and suspension but as far as the base is concerned we think we have the right setting to work from."
