Lorenzo to use Stoner 'as a reference'
27 October 2012
MotoGP Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo intends to use Casey Stoner's 'unbeatable' speed to help pull clear of the Australian's team-mate Dani Pedrosa on Sunday - and therefore secure the 2012 title.
Yamaha's Lorenzo will start between the Honda riders on the front row of the grid and, with Stoner once again in a class of his own at Phillip Island, Lorenzo is focussing on finishing ahead of Pedrosa.
Lorenzo holds a 23-point advantage and will avoid a final round title showdown with Pedrosa if he can beat his fellow Spaniard by at least three points. Second place behind Stoner would achieve that goal.
"Casey is unbeatable this weekend, if nothing strange happens," said Lorenzo. "He's riding so comfortably, sliding a lot and full throttle.
"Mainly I will try to be in second place and in front of Dani.
"It will be very important to make a good start and then try to use Casey as a reference - follow his wheel for at least two laps to be as fast as we can.
"I think it's a good qualifying position, a good lap and tomorrow is a very important day. We will try to keep calm and not make any mistakes."
Lorenzo lapped 0.517s slower than Stoner, but 0.435s ahead of Pedrosa in qualifying. Lorenzo hasn't beaten Pedrosa in races they have both finished since July's US GP.
Yamaha team manager Wilco Zeelenberg added: "Casey is again half a second faster but he's risking a lot and he has the feeling and the speed. Jorge is doing really well and it seems like we have a good package to fight with tomorrow."
The soon to retire Stoner will be seeking his sixth successive Phillip Island win on Sunday.
