Moto3: Vinales sets sights on Salom

6 November 2012

Maverick Viñales approaches the final round of a controversial season looking to overhaul Luis Salom's nine-point advantage for runner-up in the inaugural Moto3 World Championship.

Vinales held second in the standings by five points prior to his shock Sepang withdraw, but hasn't scored a point since - the Blusens Avintia FTR Honda rider crashing out on his return to action at Phillip Island.

"We come to the last race of the year and we can take the runner-up spot. No doubt, that is the goal,” said Vinales of this weekend's Valencia event. “We'll play everything on one card and we do so at a track that I like and where I feel comfortable.

“The presence of the fans and the fans will spur me on, but it won't be easy. The Ricardo Tormo circuit is quite twisty, so the chassis setup is very important for success. I am motivated and convinced that we can do a good job.

“We have a good chance of achieving our objectives."

Vinales won last year's Valencia 125cc race by 3.2sec.

The Spanish teenager's 2013 plans remain unknown following his Blusens bust-up. Salom, who has won his first two grands prix this season for RW Racing, will switch to the factory KTM team in 2013.

Vinales is one of the names linked to the second 'orange' ride.

Vinales and KTM's newly crowned Moto3 champion Sandro Cortese have both won five races this year. Cortese is moving to Moto2 next year.
