Who gained most in MotoGP 2012?

23 November 2012

In terms of Championship position Alvaro Bautista made the greatest gains in MotoGP this year, relative to the 2011 season.

The Spaniard, 13th overall in his first two years of MotoGP with Suzuki, jumped eight places to fifth in the 2012 standings for Gresini Honda, helped by an injury free season and his first two premier-class podiums.

Tech 3 Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow made the next best rise, gaining five places compared with 2011 - and also taking his first two podiums - for seventh in the 2012 championship.

Up front, title rivals Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo made the biggest victory gains - plus four wins for Pedrosa and three for eventual champion Lorenzo - as both scored six podiums more than last year.

While Randy de Puniet was able to make the change from a satellite Pramac Ducati to CRT spec Aspar Aprilia work for the better, Colin Edwards suffered most in the switch from Tech 3 Yamaha to a Forward Racing Suter-BMW.

Naturally, those that missed events in 2011 or performed badly last season had a better chance of gains in 2012 and vice versa.

Valentino Rossi was the only rider to enter every race in both years and move upwards in the 2012 championship.

The order shown below is by championship change (+, =, -) for 2011 vs. 2012. This season was over 18 rounds, while 2011 was over 17.

Key: +1 means one more than in 2011, = means the same as 2011, -1 means one less than 2011 etc.
