Marquez: The weather is definitely not our friend!
26 November 2012
Having managed just 28 laps due to rain on his MotoGP debut at Valencia, wet weather again tormented star rookie Marc Marquez on day one of a Honda test in Malaysia.
Riding alongside Gresini Honda's Alvaro Bautista and factory test riders Kousuke Akiyoshi and Takumi Takahashi at teh Sepang circuit on Monday, the reigning Moto2 champion completed just 26 laps.
“At the moment the weather is definitely not our friend!” said the Spanish teenager. “This morning the circuit was wet and we waited until 11:00 to go out on track. After only 4 exits it began to rain again and the day was over for us.”
Marquez set a best lap time of 2m 3.650s, 1.46s behind the best of Bautista, but comfortably ahead of the test riders.
“The grip level was very low and at the beginning it was quite difficult to find any grip at all. However I am happy because I have been able to improve my lap time each time I went out, even though I remained on the same tyres,” Marquez revealed.
“Let's hope that the weather will be kinder tomorrow and it won't rain!"
Bautista was trying 'a series of suspension updates brought by Showa, which will form the basis of the next two days of the test'.
The official Sepang race lap record is a 2m 2.108s, by Casey Stoner on a Ducati back in 2007, with Jorge Lorenzo putting his Yamaha on pole with a 2m 0.334s in October's grand prix.
The fastest unofficial Sepang lap is a 1m 59.607s, set by retired champion Stoner on a Repsol Honda during testing in February. Marquez is taking Stoner's place alongside Dani Pedrosa for 2013.
Testing at Sepang is due to conclude on Wednesday, before the winter ban starts on December 1.
