Marquez raises pace at Sepang, rides 2013 RCV
27 November 2012
After a rain-interrupted opening day of private Honda testing at Sepang, Marc Marquez, Alvaro Bautista and the factory test riders were able to enjoy much better weather on day two in Malaysia
Although the track was still slightly wet this morning, by 11.30am it was drying out quickly and new Repsol Honda rider Marquez was able to complete a full day of testing for the first time as a MotoGP rider.
The Moto2 champion spent the day trying various set ups and also tested the 2013 prototype, which team-mate Dani Pedrosa used at the previous Valencia test. Pedrosa is not present this week.
The Spanish teenager completed 60 Tuesday laps with a best time of 2m 1.355s, over two-seconds quicker than he had been on day one and good enough to qualify eighth on the grid for October's grand prix.
The official Sepang race lap record is a 2m 2.108s, and best lap a 2m 0.334s. The fastest unofficial lap is a 1m 59.607s, set by newly retired champion Casey Stoner during testing in February. Marquez is taking over Stoner's seat.
"Today we finally had dry conditions for the whole day!” said Marquez, who only recorded 28 dry laps on his debut at Valencia and 26 laps on Monday.
“In the morning the track was a little wet still from yesterday but it dried up pretty quickly and we were able to go out on track at around 11.30am and make use of the entire day.
“In the first exit we improved our time from yesterday which is definitely a positive. Then we tried some new set ups and I started to understand the bike better and my confidence began to grow.
“I also tried the 2013 prototype today which felt good, but it's more important that I take my time to learn the MotoGP bike and adapt my riding style to suit these bigger machines.
“It's been a great day and I hope the weather remains dry for tomorrow so we can cover more laps and continue to learn".
Gresini Honda rider Bautista - quickest during the limited dry running on day one - lowered his best time by 0.3s, but was still 0.6s slower than Marquez on Tuesday.
Kousuke Akiyoshi was just under two seconds from Bautista with fellow test rider Takumi Takahashi a further 3.5s back.
Testing at Sepang concludes on Wednesday, with the winter test ban starting on December 1.
