Pirro looks ahead to new role as Ducati test rider

'Riding a MotoGP bike is the goal of every rider and doing it for Ducati makes it even more special' - Michele Pirro
Michele Pirro has described his role as a Ducati MotoGP test rider as a 'dream come true'.

Pirro jumped at the chance to join Franco Battaini as a development rider on the Desmosedici as the Italian marque strives for improved results in 2013 with Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso.

For Pirro, the opportunity to compete in several MotoGP races next year for Ducati was a more attractive option than remaining in the second tier CRT class.

“This is a dream come true,” the 26-year-old Italian told GPone.com.

“Riding a MotoGP bike is the goal of every rider and doing it for Ducati makes it even more special.

“I couldn't be happier. It doesn't even seem like I am a test rider...

“After testing with Ducati at Mugello they offered me the job as test rider and it seemed like the best choice, rather than continuing in CRT.

“I'll do fewer races, it's true, but I'll have the opportunity to show my worth.”

Pirro, who intends to return to racing full-time in 2014, says he will have the opportunity to compete as a wild-card at Jerez, Mugello and Misano.

Analysing his role as a test rider, he said: “When Nicky and Andrea get on the bike, their goal is to adapt the bike to their riding styles and improve their own performance.

“Instead, I have to understand the potential of the new components and make a choice.

“Franco [Battaini] will focus more on durability and reliability testing, while I will work on outright performance.”

Pirro claimed the best ever result for a CRT machine as he finished fifth on Gresini's FTR-Honda at the final round in his debut season in MotoGP at Valencia last month.

He capitalised on tricky weather conditions and a shrewd tyre choice to become the first rider on a CRT bike to notch a top-five result in the class.
