Your 2011 Rider of the Year Casey Stoner dropped from first to third in this year's list, matching his position in the final 2012 Championship standings.

Following a dominant run to the 2011 title in his debut season with Repsol Honda, Stoner came into 2012 as favourite to claim back-to-back championships, but was trailing both Jorge Lorenzo and team-mate Dani Pedrosa when injury at Indianapolis ended his challenge.

By that stage, we already knew Stoner was in the midst of his last MotoGP season, the two-time champion shocking the paddock with the announcement he was heading for retirement.

Though it's difficult to say whether a fully fit Stoner would have bridged the gap to Lorenzo, the Australian's five wins at least ensured he went out at the top of his game.
