A series of frustrating issues have hampered the start of an exclusive two-day test permitted to the CRT teams that will be using the 'standard' ECU in this year's MotoGP World Championship, with just Danilo Petrucci getting any notable track time at Sepang.
A head-start for the teams that will be utilising the Magnetti Marelli ECU in 2013 – before it becomes compulsory for every team in 2014 -, NGM Forward Racing, Avintia Bluseuns and CAME Ioda have been given two days of extra track time before being joined by the rest of the field for the official pre-season tests on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
However, the opportunity would go amiss for most of the riders, with only CAME Ioda's Petrucci able to get any track time, the Italian claiming a best lap of 2mins 06.841secs aboard the Suter-BMW over a total of 27 laps.
By contrast, his team-mate Lukas Pesek failed to make it onto the track, while NGM Forward Racing's Colin Edwards and Claudio Corti were forced to watch in frustration as the team continued to build their FTR-Kawasakis, the Swiss outfit having received key parts late. By the end of the day, Edwards had managed an out-lap but Corti would not leave the pit-lane.
Over at Avintia Bluseuns, Hector Barbera's day was ruined by a wiring loom issue that kept his mechanics occupied for more than five hours. Though the Spaniard did make it out on track, it was only for four slow laps.
Team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama, meanwhile, completed just nine laps as he assessed the condition of his injured wrist. Reporting some pain in the wrist once off the bike, Aoyama will consider whether to continue with the test tomorrow.
The teams will have one more day of private testing before it will share the track with its CRT rivals and the factory/satellite teams for the next three days.
