Marquez mixes it up with big guns at Sepang

'I thought that I would take a little longer to get back 'on it', but right from the opening laps I felt very comfortable on the bike' - Marc Marquez
New Repsol Honda signing Marc Marquez summed up his sensational performance on the opening day of the Sepang MotoGP test by admitting he felt 'on it' from the off.

The reigning Moto2 champion was third fastest in Malaysia behind teammate Dani Pedrosa and Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo, with his fastest lap in 2m 01.201s a mere 0.044s off Pedrosa's fastest time.

It was an awesome effort by the young Spaniard, which firms up his potential as a podium contender from the opening race in Qatar in April.

“I'm very happy with how the first day went, because you always have a few nerves after a couple of months out,” he said.

“I thought that I would take a little longer to get back 'on it', but right from the opening laps I felt very comfortable on the bike.

“We picked up confidence from the start, although obviously we can still improve.”

Marquez, though, moved to play down his impressive pace somewhat at Sepang, reasoning that the early-season times should not be regarded as a 'reference point'.

“I don't think the result today should be used as a reference point, because we are all trying out new things.

“I focused on simply finding a good set-up and getting comfortable on the bike,” he said.

“I tried to put in a good time so that the day's testing had a purpose.”

Marquez actually led the timesheets at the halfway margin before dropping to third in the afternoon, one place ahead of the seemingly revitalized Valentino Rossi on the factory Yamaha M1.

Golly Gee but I hate having all these Spanish midgets riding bikes. Let's put some fat guys with hangovers from last nights footie match on those Hondas and then we will have some real racing.
