Lorenzo makes fast start on day two at Sepang

6 February 2013

The first hour of day two at the Sepang MotoGP test has already seen Jorge Lorenzo smash the fastest lap time on Tuesday's opening day.

The reigning double MotoGP champion took his Yamaha to the top with a best lap time of 2m 0.568s on his sixth lap of the day.

That is just two tenths from Lorenzo's own official pole record, set in qualifying for October's Malaysian Grand Prix.

As of 11am, one hour after the start of testing, Lorenzo is 0.410s clear of countryman Dani Pedrosa, who set the day one pace for Repsol Honda with a 2m 1.157s lap.

Pedrosa's rookie team-mate Marc Marquez is currently third (+0.791s) and Lorenzo's returning team-mate Valentino Rossi fourth (0.940s).

The top satellite rider, Tech 3 Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow, is one second from Lorenzo.

Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Marquez were covered by just 0.044s by the end of day one, with Rossi 0.427s adrift.

The fastest lap in last year's pre-season tests was an unofficial record of 1m 59.607s by newly retired double world champion Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda).

That stunning time was also set early in the day (on Stoner's second lap) before the speed-sapping temperature rises.
