Aspar's Jonas Folger led the Moto3 timesheets for the first time in 2013 after making the fastest start to this week's final official pre-season test at Jerez.

The German took his Kalex KTM to a best time of 1m 47.149s. That was 0.3s behind the fastest lap by Maverick Vinales at February's test, but good enough to keep closest Monday rival Alex Rins (Estrella Galicia 0'0 KTM) at bay by 0.252s.

"I am happy because we have improved by six tenths since the last test here and considering there are no major changes to the bike that is very positive," declared Folger, preparing for his first full season with the Aspar team.

"We have a new exhaust available here but we decided to save it until tomorrow. We didn't get many laps done because we didn't have much track time available to us today but we got a lot of information.

"We will try some chassis updates tomorrow. At the end of the day I set the fastest lap and could have gone even faster if it wasn't for another rider holding me up in the final sector..."

Vinales (Team Calvo KTM) was third fastest on Monday (+0.308s), with Luis Salom completing an all-KTM powered top four for the factory Red Bull team.

South African Brad Binder was best of the rest, but 0.754s from Folger, on his Ambrogio-run Suter Honda. Mahindra continued to show the biggest winter improvement, following its switch to an all-Suter design, with sixth place for new signing Miguel Oliveira (0.791s).

Testing continues for the next three days, but rain is also forecast.
