Jorge Lorenzo showed he has the pace to be quick over both a single lap and an entire race distance in the wet as he took advantage of the inclement weather conditions at Jerez to test tyre life on his Yamaha.
The reigning MotoGP champion remained on track for the entire day, despite intermittent showers preventing the circuit from ever producing a dry line, posting the fastest lap time of 1min 47.423secs.
Even so, despite being quickest of all, Lorenzo insists the test was a good chance for him to evaluate the life of the Bridgestone tyre over an entire wet race distance. After an indifferent start, the Spaniard was pleased with the progress made by the end of the day.
“We stayed on the track the whole day in the wet conditions and it was good to see how the bike performed,” he said. “We improved a little bit but then the rear tyre dropped so we have to calm the bike down a little bit in the acceleration.
“We are quite good in the wet here in Jerez. It's the first time we are in these conditions so it's important to understand what our levels are. It's important to be competitive in this situation.
“We proved when the track was drying up that we could keep the performance of the rear tyre over distance. It doesn't matter how fast you are in one lap, if you can't keep the level over the whole race you cannot win.”
