Qatar MotoGP: Rossi choses 'different way' to Jorge
3 April 2013
Valentino Rossi will not try and mimic team-mate Jorge Lorenzo's riding style and has chosen to pursue his own M1 settings during his comeback Yamaha season, which starts this weekend in Qatar.
Rossi, returning to Yamaha after two tough seasons at Ducati, revealed that he tried reigning double champion Lorenzo's bike set-up during winter testing.
However he got a better response by going in a different direction during the final Jerez test - when he set a faster lap time than the young Spaniard on the two days to feature dry running.
“Jorge always uses a bit different setting because his riding style is a bit different,” explained seven time champion Rossi. “For me it is quite difficult to ride exactly with his setting - but the M1 is very suitable for different styles, because at the base it is an easy bike to bring to the limit.
“For this reason we tried to use a different setting compared to Jorge at Jerez and I had a good feeling, so we will continue in a slightly different way to him.”
But Rossi added that the differences are not great enough to cause a split in terms of future M1 development. “It is not a big difference. Just setting. So for the development of the bike we can go in the same way.”
Looking ahead to his Yamaha race return, the fired-up 34-year-old said that he is motivated by the challenge of trying to raise his level in 2013.
“The level is very high and the other three factory guys [Lorenzo, Pedrosa and Marquez] are very fast in all conditions and all tracks. It will be a great motivation to try and raise my level and my speed to fight for the podium.”
Rossi hasn't won a race since leaving Yamaha at the end of 2010.
