Nicky Hayden wasn't making any excuses as he struggled to 11th place on the grid for Sunday's opening round of the MotoGP World Championship in Qatar, admitting: 'It was a poor job by me'.

Hayden's fastest lap in Q2 of 1m 56.667s was a second slower than he managed at Losail in 2012 and in stark contrast to team-mate Andrea Dovizioso's eye-catching time, which put the Italian on the second row in fourth place.

The American rider suffered with chatter in his opening laps and made errors during his second run as he sought an improvement.

Hayden said: "In the first run, I had a lot of chatter from out of nowhere.

"I went back out, and right when I went to start my hot lap, the other guys were pulling out of the pits, and I just made too many mistakes in the traffic.

"I'm certainly not thrilled, especially because last year I was one second faster in qualifying," he added.

"It was a poor job by me when it counted, but credit to Andrea for a really good session.

"I think our set-ups are very close, but we'll definitely have to check his data."
