Austin MotoGP: Solid debut for Dovizioso

19 April 2013

Ducati MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso was satisfied with his initial pace at the new Circuit of the Americas in Texas after the Italian set the seventh fastest time in free practice on Friday.

Dovizioso encountered a minor electronics issue on his Desmosedici and was forced to switch to his second his machine, lapping in 2m 07.236s.

The Italian's best lap was 2.205s down on Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez, but Dovi is confident of upping his pace this weekend as he improves his understanding of the circuit.

“Today went pretty well, both in the morning and the afternoon,” he said.

“I'm happy because although the conditions and the track were both difficult, we're not so far from the top guys, and I feel good on the bike.

“The conditions changed a lot in the second session and will probably change again tomorrow, so we'll continue working and see what times we can do.

“Grip is really important on this circuit, because it's quite strange—different from the tracks where we usually race,” added Dovizioso, whose team-mate Nicky Hayden was ninth.

“I thought it would be fast, but it's not; there's a long straightaway, but almost all of the corners are taken in second or third gear.

“Still, they've really done a great job here.”

Ducati did not participate in a private test at the circuit last month and the team was making its debut at the track, although Hayden had lapped the circuit on a road bike.
